C5 - The Impact of Disinfection Byproducts and Combined Chlorine on Air and Water Quality

Thursday, November 7 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM « Back

A look at the causes and effects of combined chlorine (CC) and disinfection by products (DBPs) at recreational water facilities. When used properly, chlorine effectively prevents countless recreational water illnesses (RWIs). There are side effects to chlorine-based treatment applications, most notably, the formation of CC that leads to noxious DPBs. This presentation will include an explanation of guidelines to manage CC and limit the build-up of DPBs.  There will also be a new look at breakpoint chlorination.

1. Evaluate the formation of combined chlorine and other disinfection byproducts associated with the use of chlorine.
2. Reduce the levels of chloramines and other disinfection by-products in swimming pools.
3. Identify the problems associated with high levels of chloramines and other disinfection by-products in swimming pools.
4. Evaluate the limitations of calculating chlorine levels required to achieve breakpoint chlorination.
